 Ok, here we go:

  • He’s chivalrous, like he defines the word. The reason why this stands the test of time is because, as we know, chivalry is dead. He does things like helping Lizzie into the a carriage or standing up when a lady enters the room, not because he’s forced to or is trying to impress anyone, but because the social standards of the day would have dictated it from a gentleman such as himself. Also, he really fancies Lizzie so he goes out of his way to do nice things for her, like, you know…covering up her youngest sister’s family-name-ruining elopement with that cad Wickham and having him shipped off to Newcastle.
  • He doesn’t know how to express himself, and that’s endearing. Before he ever tells Lizzie he likes her, he’s super awkward to the point of being rude despite the fact that he really likes her. It’s kind of like grade school in that sense; where the boy that antagonizes you really likes you but doesn’t know how to show or say it. When he finally gets his act together at the end and properly tells Lizzie that he’s always held out hope that she might be “generous enough to trifle” with him, I melt into a puddle of my own smitten-ness.
  • He’s a good dancer, in spite of refusing to dance with Lizzie at the assembly. Good (& straight) man dancers are hard to come by, but Darcy sure knows how to cut a rug at Bingley’s ball, and that’s hot.
  • He loves his sister. He gets her a piano forte and cock blocks Wickham’s plan to run away with Georgiana’s money, so A+ Mr. Darcy.
  • He doesn’t let his aunt Lady Catherine dictate his life by way of marrying her daughter. People who defy older rich relatives in favor of true love are few and far between in literary works of this general time frame, so once again, well played Darcy.
  • Lastly, he’s handsome and rich and tall. Those three things are always going to stand the test of time. Always.
